A common noun is a general name for any person, place, animal, or thing. For example: boy, girl, city, dog, school, river etc. A proper noun is the special name of a person, place, animal, or thing which always begins with a capital letter. For example: David, Texas, Tommy, St. Mary’s School, Chile River etc. Here “country” is a common noun, but “Canada” is a proper noun. “Boy” is a common noun, but “David” is a proper noun.
