What are Articles:
Articles are small but very important terms in English grammar. Articles are the words “a,” “an,” and “the.” Before nouns, they add further information about a person, place, animal, or thing. Articles tell us if we are talking about something in general or something in particular. When we say “a cat,” we mean any cat. But when we say “the cat,” we mean a specific animal that we already know. Reading articles helps kids learn how to make clear and proper phrases when they talk to people every day.
The rules for “A,” “An,” and “The”
Use the word “a” before words that start with a consonant sound, as “a bag,” “a pen,” or “a car.” The word “an” goes before nouns that start with a vowel sound, such an apple, an elephant, or an umbrella. It’s important to give focus to the sound, not simply the letter.
When we discuss something specific or something we already know, we use the word “the.” The light, the teacher, or the book on the table are some examples. It can be used with nouns that are both singular and plural.
Examples using the Articles
1. This is a cat. 🐱
2. I am eating an apple. 🍎
3. The sun is shining. ☀️
