Let’s understand the states of matter:
- Solid: Solids have distinct volume and shape. A solid’s parts are tightly packed and confined to one another. E.g. ice, vehicles, tables, etc.
- Liquid: Liquids lack a defined shape but do have a defined volume. They follow their container’s shape. E.g. Juice, soup, and water.
- Gas: Gases lack both defined forms and volume. They spread out to cover whatever container they are in. E.g. In a balloon: helium, steam, and air.
In short we can say that gases spread out to fill the area they’re in, liquids take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume, and solids maintain their shape. Matter can transform from one state to another in response to temperature changes.
