Number line subtraction is a visual method that helps children understand subtraction as “counting back.” It provides a step-by-step approach to subtract the numbers.
How to Subtract Using a Number Line
1. Draw a Number Line with evenly spaced numbers, usually from 0 to 10 (or higher if needed).
2. Locate the First Number. Put your finger or a marker on this number.
3. Move Left (Jump Backward). The second number tells how many steps to move backward. Each step represents subtracting 1. Stop when you have made the correct number of jumps.
4. The number you land on is the difference (answer).
